Nazaré Big Wave Challenge Cancelled as Swell Fails to Materialise

The Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge has been called off for the 2026 waiting period after a high-pressure system disrupted the anticipated North Atlantic groundswell before it could organise into rideable XXL conditions. The event's waiting period expires on Thursday.

Forecasters at Surfline and MagicSeaweed had flagged a promising low-pressure system developing west of Iceland in late June, initially projecting wave faces in the forty-to-sixty-foot range at the iconic Portuguese canyon. The system stalled and lost fetch, ultimately delivering only fifteen-to-twenty-foot surf — impressive but below the threshold for Championship-level tow-in competition.

WSL Big Wave head judge Rodrigo Koxa confirmed that an emergency call with the athlete field on Wednesday morning reached consensus to close the waiting period without running the event. Several wildcards who had flown in from Hawaii and Australia expressed frustration with the decision on social media.

The contest will next be eligible to run in the 2026-27 North Atlantic season, which opens in October.
